Guys, I Don’t Think People Understand How Games Are Made

In one of the most brutal eras the industry has ever seen, there needs to be a better understanding of how games are made. I don’t mean we need to teach people what games are, or how to play them, or - heck - how to appreciate them like fine cinema you force on a date in college when you’re 19 and halfway through the movie you can tell they’re not loving it and for some reason that makes them the weirdos.But, seriously, it’s truly humiliating that he enjoys games. Painters probably weren’t thrilled to hear about John Wayne Gacy’s hobby, either. And before I get an email from a lawyer that’s paid $500 an hour, no, they are not the same. But all of this points to a deep lack of understanding about how games are made.They want you to be so loyal that you’ll buy every product and accessory and peripheral as a ‘show of support’. You’re not a real fan until you buy the team jersey and that has nothing to do with the fact that those metaphorical jerseys are profitable and keep you locked into one ecosystem. Corporations have tricked fans into such a state of vehement loyalty that they get mad when new fans get a chance to experience games they love. Rather than saying, ‘yeah, wasn’t that great?!’, the feeling is, ‘how dare they take what was mine’.I don’t have a solution for this. I just wish people understood how games were made. How long it takes. How many workers are involved. How hard it is to make big last-minute changes. How stubborn creatives are. And how many people with different levels of power can make sweeping decisions outside of the developers’ direct control.

You can apply all of this to video games, we know how long it takes bugs to be fixed by seeing when a bug is discovered and reported and then fixed.Or to be toddler simple, if some car in a game is one too fast, the modder will just put a -1 in there. An actual dev needs to find WHY it's the wrong speed and fix that. And all that is if we accept your premise all bugs take exactly the same amount of time to initially diagnose and find the root cause of. Your post is EXACTLY the problem. ... Prefacing with, I am a Python developer so I am familiar with programming concepts and have made some small games on unity… I hear this concept of “game is poorly optimized” and there are examples of amazing “optimization” that allowed the last of us to run on the ps3 and look beautiful. On the technical level, what does optimized mean? Does optimization happen during development or QA? Share ... profiler. The profiler will tell you things like how much of each frame is being taken up by various tasks, what is taking up your memory, what is being loaded into your I/o pipeline, etc.E.g. an additional two or three hours of content instead of going from 30-60fps, or twice as many enemies on screen, or adding a crafting system, or anything else that makes people more likely to buy the game. ... Unlike other replies, you started with the most important step. Until you profile, you don't know what compromises might be worthwhile (and every optimization is a compromise, if only in the time it takes to implement). The only exception is an obvious optimization that comes for free with some other code cleanup. ... Also, once you profile, you can be surprised at how some things that were done thinking they would improve performance can actually harm it in the specific context of your game.In your painting analogy, that's like calling out various colours and art styles when someone asks "how do I paint better". Profiling is more like going to a gallery, to see what good paintings look like. But sure, having eyes to see with is pretty important to painting, and having fingers to type with is important to writing optimized code. ... Not only is it a great game in and of itself, it also ticks the other boxes in which gamers are accused of being and -ist about. Voice cast did such an exceptional job with their characters... it's unreal. Artwork really speaks to me, but I don't like some of the intentional frame rate decreases in character animations. I know it's supposed to mimic how Spider-Man into the spiderverse did things, but it wasn't done very well and it just feels like a choppy mess.There are people who actually hate women and who don't care about how "well written" a female (or black) character is. People like you should realize who you're helping when you think it's actually about the stuff you wrote about. You help hateful bigoted people, actual incels, mysogynists and racists. If they see "sweet baby inc" somewhere, they don't care at all about what that actually influenced in a game and how "well written" the characters might be, despite or because of "sweet baby inc".
